Book Reviews

Hi. I have a few sketchy book reviews here, but unlike some other reviews I do not go into detail on the books. I’ve noticed some other reviewers go into detailed story plots and character analyses, but for me it ruins the mystery of the story. This is just to give you an overview of some of my likes and dislikes and why. I hope they lead you to a good read.

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer: This story traces two young people, one a blind girl living in France and a young boy “drafted” by the Germans for his technological skills. It took Doer ten years to write an dit shows with its meticulous details and historic accuracy.

The Gentleman from Moscow by Amor Towles: Though it took a while to get into this book, it was an enjoyable and informative look into the life of a man imprisoned in a Russian hotel. The speech is somewhat formal, but the descriptions are vivid.

The Help by Kathyrn Stockett: You have probably all seen the movie, but the book is so much better. It included more scenes and events to show the various relationships between characters. Chapter 24 is a do not miss event. Recently, in the wake of Black Lives Matter, the movie was blasted for once again having a white hero come save Blacks. I did not see this at all, probably because I am white. To me, the book was a wonderful telling of friendships between people of color and whites and the exposure of Southern attitudes. We are all just people.

There are so many more! Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan, When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton, The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne.
